If your school is not meeting its AYP goals, you need immediate and intensive help. You need proven strategies for change supported by lots of TLC. SFA TurnAround helps schools develop a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement with extensive professional development on powerful instructional strategies, proven materials adapted to your state standards, and assistance from experienced educators who have helped many schools like yours meet their goals.

Powerful instructional strategies. To get the achievement gains needed, teachers and students need to work smarter rather than harder. Using instructional strategies and materials from research-proven Success for All reading programs, SFA TurnAround enables teachers to:

  • increase student engagement and motivation,
  • make adaptations to lessons to meet all learners’ needs, and
  • make the most of classroom time.

Daily lesson plans built around your reading program provide step-by-step support for implementation of powerful instructional strategies such as cooperative learning and active teaching techniques that engage students.

Initial training jumpstarts the process, but change occurs over time. In SFA TurnAround, teachers meet in small teacher learning communities every two weeks to help each other continuously strengthen their instruction under the guidance of their building facilitator and our experienced coaches. Teachers and coaches model for each other and provide feedback directed toward growth.

Classroom management. Focusing all energy on learning builds the rate of achievement. In SFA TurnAround, a school-wide approach to building cooperative learning and conflict resolution engages children in learning and keeps disruptions to a minimum. Initial training and ongoing discussion and feedback among teachers and with SFAF coaches create powerful opportunities for growth.

Focus on leadership. Good leadership ensures that everyone’s energy is going in the same direction—to increase student achievement. The SFA TurnAround Leadership Academy helps school leaders establish a culture of continuous improvement to move achievement ahead quickly.

Frequent assessment. Rapid progress comes when instruction is guided by student achievement data. In SFA TurnAround, quarterly school-wide assessments are used to closely monitor the rate of achievement growth, and are used to celebrate individual student progress. In the classroom, informal progress monitoring tools help teachers observe reading strategy development on a day-to-day basis.

Effective grouping practices to differentiate instruction. In SFA TurnAround, grouping by reading level across grade and class lines for reading classes ensures that every minute of reading instruction is at the right level for every student, so that students make rapid progress.

Tutoring for struggling students. Tutoring is the most effective tool known for increasing achievement. In SFA TurnAround, tutors are equipped with Alphie’s Alley, a research-proven computer-based program that helps them deliver an individualized program for each student.

Positive connections with parents. SFA TurnAround provides access to the wealth of strategies developed by teachers in our network of 1300 schools. Engage parents with Second Cup of Coffee meetings, Raising Readers parent workshops, Money-in-the-Bank celebrations, and more.

School planning and intervention team. Schools are faced with innumerable demands. SFA TurnAround guides you in developing a school planning and intervention team to set targets, celebrate progress, and solve problems.
